Most Dangerous Roads and Highways in Brooklyn

Dangerous Roads

Brooklyn’s streets carry heavy traffic every day. Drivers share them with pedestrians, cyclists, buses and trucks. Some roads see more serious crashes than others.

If you were hurt on one of them, a Brooklyn car accident lawyer can review what happened. This page looks at the roads city officials have flagged and what that can mean for your claim.

What the City Has Identified

The New York City Department of Transportation studied where the most serious crashes happen in Brooklyn. In its Brooklyn Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, released in 2015, the agency named 49 Priority Corridors and 91 Priority Intersections.

The plan found that Priority Corridors made up 9 percent of Brooklyn’s street mileage but held half of the borough’s pedestrian fatalities and severe injuries.

The data in that plan is several years old, and traffic patterns change. Still, it gives a useful look at where the risks were concentrated.

Roads Named by the City

The same release names several Brooklyn roads:

  • Atlantic Avenue. Listed among the arterial streets with high crash concentrations.
  • Ocean Parkway. Also listed among those arterial streets.
  • Rockaway Parkway. Identified as a Priority Corridor.
  • Linden Boulevard. Named for planned corridor improvements.

This is not a ranking of every dangerous road. Other streets and highways, such as those with heavy truck or commuter traffic, may carry risk too. We have not listed a ranking of highways, because we could not verify one from an official source.

Why Crashes Cluster on Certain Roads

Several factors can raise the risk on a busy road:

  • Wide lanes and high speeds
  • Heavy traffic and frequent turns
  • Many pedestrians crossing at busy intersections
  • Poorly marked crossings or confusing signals
  • Double parking and blocked sight lines

These are general risk factors, not findings about any one road.

If the Road Itself Played a Part

Sometimes the road is part of the problem. Missing signs, broken signals, potholes or poor markings can contribute to a crash.

These cases can be complicated, especially when a city agency is responsible. Notice rules and shorter deadlines may apply, so it helps to start with understanding liability in Brooklyn accidents and the statute of limitations for personal injury cases.
